We often talk about contextualizing our experiences and those of our ancestors.
Looking at generational and historical trauma can help us understand how we experience and interact with the world around us-- but for Cinco de mayo, a day that celebrates perseverance despite barriers I want to highlight Intergenerational Healing.
Here’s how being Latinx means our ancestors also passed down resilience:
Multigenerational homes
Studies show that intergenerational homes are beneficial for our mental health.
Elders get an influx of purpose and fulfillment by helping care for younger generations and passing down lessons and elements of their culture.
Younger generations obtain lessons and priceless cultural experiences, and connection with their grandparents/older generations
Parents get help with child care (less stress!)
Perseverance
Our parents and great grandparents have persevere. They have had to survive so much to help us get here and those lessons are passed down.
We have the ability to continue to grow, heal, and persevere.
Comunidad
The value of community and familia help us maintain of the most important elements of our mental health: a support system.
Knowing we are not alone and we can always reach out for help.
Cultura
Food : stories and connection to our ancestors through recipes that nourish not just our body but our souls
Music : happiness, tears, whatever mood you are in, our music help us express it through lyrics, beats. Etc.
Language : a connection to our ancestors and unique words not available to us in other languages.
