In honor of mother’s day, today we are talking about the power of moms on our mental health.

They play a huge role in the formation of our internal world and here are just a few of those aspects:

Biological, Physical well-being:

  • Studies show that our biological mother’s eating habits and physical health affect their reproductive health– which means it affects their ovaries. Why is this important to us now as adults? It affected our early biological and physiological development which in turn affects our mental health

  • If they are in charge of our meals, they define our nutrition

Future Relationships

  • Have you ever heard: we marry our parents? It's not as incestuous as it sounds.

  • You are a blank slate when you are born. Everything we learn about the world: what to expect, how to interact with the world, is shaped by our parents.

Self identity

  • When we go through individuation: teenagehood, we define who we are by pushing away from our parents: comparing our only example to what and who WE want to be.

Self love/Self esteem

  • When we grow up without our biological mother, this instantly shapes our sense of self and can trigger thoughts and questions about our love-ability

  • Growing up with a mother (biological or otherwise) that is unable to be present because of drug use, poverty, community viole, mental illness (like features of narcissist personality disorder– which I will have a video on) , etc. We grow up with a lack of trust towards the world

Relationship with Women

  • Our maternal figure can also shape our expectations of what it means to be a woman

  • It sets a base and expectations for what to expect of women.

Our mothers (biological and otherwise) have the power to share our expectations of ourselves and the world around us.

Remember: Most mother's are neither all good nor all bad- moms are human, and they make mistakes. Part of healing parental wounds is coming to terms with that.
